Hon. Lady Justice Elizabeth Muyovwe

 

PROFILE

Hon. Lady Justice Elizabeth Muyovwe is a Judge of the Supreme Court. She was appointed to the Supreme Court on 29th October, 2010. Justice Muyovwe holds Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Zambia. Justice Muyovwe also holds a Diploma in Women’s Law from the University of Oslo in Norway and was trained in Legislative Drafting under the Commonwealth Secretariat in Harare, Zimbabwe. She was admitted to the Bar in 1981.

Prior to her current appointment, Justice Muyovwe served as Judge of the High Court from 1998 to 2010. She was appointed Judge-in-Charge of the Livingstone High Court in 2003, a position she held until 2010. Justice Muyovwe served as State Advocate/Assistant Senior Legal Aid Counsel at the then Ministry of Legal Affairs from 1981 to 1987. She then took up an appointment at Lima Bank Limited as Senior Legal Officer in 1988. Justice Muyovwe also served as a part-time Research Associate at the Women and Law in Southern Africa from 1989 to 1993 and as part-time Coordinator, National Legal Aid Clinic for Women in 1990. Justice Muyovwe was Vice Chairperson for the Lands Tribunal between 1996 and 1998 and also Director, National Legal Aid Clinic for Women from 1991 to 1998. In addition, she taught as a part-time Lecturer in Domestic Relations at the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education from 1999 to 2003.

In 2002, she was appointed as an Alternate Judge of the United Nations Special Court for Sierra Leone.

Justice Muyovwe published an article entitled “Unequal pay for equal work”  for the Institute of Women’s Law, University of Oslo, Norway in 1988.

She is a member of the Zambia Association of Women Judges (ZAWJ) and a Member of the Bible Society of Zambia. Justice Muyovwe served as president of ZAWJ from 2012 to 2015.
