Advisory Committee on Gender in Development visits the Cancer Diseases Hospital in Lusaka

Matters impacting humanity such as illness affect all people, and cut across gender, race, social divide, age, and any other divides that may be in existence. This reason, among others, compelled the Advisory Committee on Gender in Development under the leadership of Hon. Mrs. Justice S. Mulenga to visit the Cancer Diseases Hospital in Lusaka, and make a small donation to the patients in the female and pediatric wards on Friday 17th March, 2017.

The Cancer Diseases Hospital situated at UTH in Lusaka, is a third level referral hospital which was opened for treatment in 2006 but was officially commissioned in July 2007. It is the only government hospital specialized in cancer treatment in the country offering comprehensive cancer treatment. The Hospital offers diagnostic and therapy services. In Diagnostics, the hospital offers Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT) Scan, Ultrasonography, Laboratory Investigations, Mammography and X-ray. Therapy includes chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and radiation therapy and will soon include nuclear medicine. Other services include Palliative care, counselling, nutrition and social welfare and will soon include surgical oncology.

The majority of these patients are Cervical Cancer patients which is the highest single reported Cancer-over 650 new patients in 2015 and 2016, followed by Breast Cancer, with an average number of 167 new patients each year,  Kaposi’s Sarcoma –160 new cases in the past 3 years and Prostate Cancer 123 new cases in the past 3 years.
