Hon. Mrs. Justice Nicola Ann Sharpe Phiri

 

 

PROFILE

Hon Justice N.A. Sharpe-Phiri is a Judge of the Court of Appeal since 16th April 2021. Prior to this appointment, she served as a Judge of the High Court from 2011 to 2021. During this period, was Judge-in-Charge of the Family & Children’s Division from 2017 to 2021 and was a member of the Advisory Committee on Training and Continuing Education of the Judiciary.

She is also currently serving in various capacities in the Judiciary including Chairperson of the Small Claims Court of Zambia. Member of the Apprasal Performance Committee and Focal Point Person for Zambian Judiciary under the Judicial Institute for Africa (JIFA).

The Judge is also a Commercial Arbitrator; Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), both London and Zambian Branch; the Vice President of the Zambia Association of Women Judges (ZAWJ); a member of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) and the Commonwealth Association of Magistrates and Judges.

Judge Sharpe-Phiri celebrates 30 years of being in the legal profession this year having been admitted to the bar on 16  December 1992. She holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Zambia and a Master’s degree in Human Rights, Conflict and Justice from SOAS University of London.

Prior to joining the bench, she served as Managing Partner at the firm of Sharpe and Howard Legal Practitioners from 2001 to 2011; as Partner in the law practice of Mopani Chambers from 1995 to 2001; and as Assistant Associate at Chilupe & Company from 1992 to 1995.

She has served in various other capacities including Mediator, Commissioner of the Small Claims Court, Vice President of the Female Lawyers Association (FELAZ) and Honorary Secretary of the Legal Practitioners Committee of the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ).
